3.2.3- Social and political debates about environmental issues
Many people would consider that Australia and the rest of the World is currently facing an unprecedented environmental crisis. There are a multitude of strong and vocal opinions about what needs to be done to avert disaster for humanity and the environment we rely so heavily upon. At the opposite end of the spectrum, there are a number of groups that also have strong and vocal opinions who oppose many of the swift actions proposed and call for more moderate approaches that will have less impact on the economy and current industries.
These opposing ideas result in debate, both within the community and by the government who are in charge of making the decisions that can affect the environment and those that rely on or use it.
We will look at current debates across three key areas:

Climate Change:
"I can change your mind about climate..." documentary (watched in class) follows ex-conservative senator Nick Minchin and ex-lawyer Anna Rose, as they travel the world introducing each other to supporters of their opposing positions on climate. This documentary aired in 2012. |
Water Management:
This clip looks at the importance of environmental water flows- that is, making sure we allocate some water to the natural environment that we rely on to help provide it in the first place! |
Renewable Energy:
Renewable energy in a nutshell- this clip provides a quick comparison between energy types and sources, outlining some of the problems faced by our dependence on fossil fuels and some of the possible ways these could be overcome in the future. |
