4.1.4- The Importance of Healthy Outdoor Environments
To understand the importance of a healthy outdoor environment we first need to understand the connections between the outdoor environment and our everyday lives. Nearly all products contain ingredients directly or indirectly derived from outdoor environments. We value clean air and water, opportunities for recreation and learning, all of which benefit from a healthy outdoor environment.
We have briefly looked at how human need puts an enormous strain on the environment. The demand for goods and services combined with the ongoing threats of introduced species, climate change and urbanisation put the environments health under continual pressure. Most of the value we place on the environment is linked to what we can gain from it. These gains can be passive or semi-passive such as recreation, wilderness and aesthetics; consumer values may include natural resources, from timber to grazing land, mining to fisheries; and ecological values including water catchments, soil protection and biodiversity.
