2.2.4- The impact on outdoor environments of urbanisation and changing human lifestyles
Urbanisation refers tol the development and growth of towns and cities, including residential areas, as people move to these locations. Australia is one of the most highly urbanised and coastal populations in the world, with more than 80% of the population living within 100km of the coast. While urban areas are less than 2% of Australia's total land mass, they are one of the key drivers of environmental impact. New and growing urban areas need more space, construction and development consumes environmental resources, as does providing the goods and services that a growing population needs- all of which directly impacts on the natural environment.
