Outdoor environments can be classified in number of different ways. The most common concept used today is though the use of Biomes as a way to distinguish different environments. Biomes are distinguished by their climate, geological features, the plant and animal communities found within them, among other factors.
Victoria is home to eight broadly recognized Biomes:
- Alpine - Grassland - Heathland - Arid (Mallee)
- Dry forest and woodland - Wet forest and rainforest - Inland waters and wetlands - Coast and Marine environments
