2.2.2- Community-based environmental action...
to promote positive impacts on humans on outdoor environments
A community is a group of people living in the same place, having a shared characteristic or a feeling of fellowship with others, due to shared attitudes, interests and goals. There are a huge variety of different groups of people that could be considered to be communities. In relation to OES, a community could be thought of as a group of people who live, work, have businesses in an area, share a common interest in the local environment, and could even be those who work together to develop plans and goals in order to protect the environment.
Community-based environmental groups focus on the health of the whole local environment. This can extend beyond the borders of their local area and can often involve social, economic and environmental conditions. This means that communities could also include those people who join together in groups for Adopt a Roadside program, members of Landcare, supporters of Land for Wildlife and even special events such as Clean Up Australia Day,
Every living thing has an impact on the environment, especially humans! Human impacts can be widespread and large scale such as deforestation and producing greenhouse gases, or they can be much smaller scale, like walking off the track through the local park or the litter you find as you walk through the street.
Environmental action to promote positive human impacts is essentially any action that people take to help the environment. This could include actions that repair previous negative human impacts, or actions that help prevent future negative impacts from occurring and damaging the environment.
